  14. <p>   [Text] As the outcry over the government's handling of the
  15. drought crisis gains momentum, a gloomy future awaits farm
  16. labourers.
  17. </p>
  18. <p>   The Western Cape ANC [African national Congress] branch
  19. accused the government of a "monstrous lack of concern" for
  20. people facing starvation."
  21. </p>
  22. <p>   It said in a statement that the government's delay in
  23. approving an Operation Hunger application for R[rands]20
  24. million relief funding was "yet another example of its
  25. insincerity in responding to the critical needs of the people
  26. it claims to serve."
  27. </p>
  28. <p>   Experts believe that thousands of farmworkers who are faced
  29. with the prospects of losing their jobs could stream into the
  30. cities in search of jobs.
  31. </p>
  32. <p>   A spokesperson for the Farmworkers Research and Resource
  33. Project, Simon Norfolk told NEW NATION that farm labourers were
  34. the most vulnerable because they were not unionised and had no
  35. employment contracts.

  37. <p>   Meanwhile, the Land Bank yesterday said it would urge banks
  38. not to sequestrate farmers who are in financial difficulties
  39. because of the drought.
